As a metonym for Soviet life, panel homes are considered gray, drab, and poorly-lit, as people are quick to make judgements about uniform concrete slabs that could hardly seem to contain life in them, yet alone such authentic feelings as joy, sadness, kindness, ambition, jealousy, empathy. What’s in a gesture? With a wave of the hand, the conductor signals to the orchestra to start the symphony; the artist begins painting a bare canvas, or a camera operator starts rolling film. A gesture can be inviting, beckoning strangers to enter or open up; it can also be detached, as when someone demonstrably displays their reticence by crossing their arms.

The main question that art historians have asked about artists books has been where, generically, does art end, and a book begin? Artists books have been sought after, collected, and curated by museums, book art organizations, and private collectors. Dick Higgins admits that, “ perhaps the hardest thing to do in connection with the artists book used to find the right language for discussing it.“

Anthropologists have long debated the role of the body in structuring our behaviours, perceptions, and practices. Marcel Mauss introduced the term habitus, which, when expanded in Bourdieu’s theory of practice, can be summarized as culture that begets behaviour.
